How to Relieve Your Mileage Headache

There are many ways of relieving your mileage headache.  To improve your fuel mileage, ensure your vehicle is well maintained. You can definitely add more miles to your car and keep more money in your pocket in the process.

Mileage relief
If you are a driver in the UK it’s possible to claim mileage relief, particularly if you are using your own car on activities related to business or fuelling a company vehicle with your money. However, the claim does not involve the fuel you use to travel to your place of work unless you are travelling to a temporary work place. To know how much mileage allowance relief you will be able to claim, the business mileage should be added up for the current tax year add multiplied by the mileage rates approved.  Remember to keep the mileage and date records of your journeys to work. (See later in this post)

Treat the fuel system
The more you use you car the more fuel impurities build up and form deposits within the fuel system of your car. Contaminates of this nature will suck the power from your car forcing it to work harder every time.  Treating the fuel system cleans out the debris robbing fuel mileage from your vehicle. Optimum fuel mileage is then restored.

Emission test
Ensure your car has passed an emission test and has been well tuned up. This will improve the fuel mileage by about 4 percent. However, the results differ depending on the type of repair and the quality of the job done.  If you fix a serious problem with maintenance such as replacing oxygen sensors that are faulty, mileage could go up by 40 percent.
Also enhance your fuel mileage by having worn out old spark plugs replaced as well as plug wires that have failed with fresh spark plugs and new-fangled plug wires. Dirty filters should also be replaced to ensure the vital systems are not working too hard than they should.

Motor oil grade in use
Relieve your mileage headache by around 2 percent by going for motor oil grade your car’s manufacturer has recommended.  For instance, using 10W-30 type of motor oil on a car engine made for the 5W-30 motor oil decreases the fuel mileage by about 2 percent.  Do not forget to use motor oil with an energy conserving label to ensure it doesn’t have additives that reduce friction.

Track fuel economy
If the fuel economy of a car drops, it’s a sign things are not all right with the engine. Avoid engine trouble by keeping track of the fuel economy. This can be done by noting the amount of fuel bought with every fill up and keeping an eye on the odometer reading.  Most new vehicles come with gauges ensuring fuel economy can be monitored and maintained in real-time. That way, you can scrutinise your driving habits and their impact on fuel economy.

Moderate driving if you may
The last thing you want is driving your car as if you are on the safari rally. Rapid starts, rough accelerations and driving in high speed will increase consumption of fuel and car emissions. If you can drive at 65 miles per hour rather than 75, you could decrease the amount of fuel you use even by 20 percent.
Above all, always ensure your car is in great condition to relieve yourself mileage headache in the future.
